Pretty but Pricey Dresses at the Lela Rose Sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

With so many sales this month, we may have become somewhat jaded and easily susceptible to sticker shock even if the actual percentage off is rather generous. At least, that might explain what we experienced at the Lela Rose sale, which offers from 50% to 80% off womenswear and accessories. The sale takes place in the elegant and feminine designer's showroom, where the majority frocks and smattering of separates are organized from sizes zero (only a few items) to twelve.
We realize that Lela Rose dresses retail for upwards of $1200, but it still hurts to see a dress on sale in the mid-to-high three digits. That said, here's an example of what's on the racks: A creamy crepe frock ($175), a stone-hued quilted and embroidered wide-collared belted jacket ($695), an embossed ivory jacket with a nipped waist ($395), a springy meringue crepe dress ($425), a long-sleeved silver and cream brocade mini-dress ($495 and very wedding friendly), a flirty paint-dot ruched-sleeve number ($325), and some punchy floral and sequined shorts ($395). The best deals we found were a teal linen button-down and puff-shoulder blazer ($160), soft knits ($225), silk/cashmere shrugs ($150) and textured, pleated and cuffed shorts ($140).

Even though the pricing seemed relatively high and the stock not overly abundant, hard-core Lela Rose fans were making themselves quite at home. We mistook a presumably Lela Rose-clad shopper for a staffer; she admitted that she had been there long enough that she might as well work there (sorry about that, btw). Enthusiastic shoppers were also dropping trou anywhere and everywhere (hello thongs and, whoa, full-body Spanx) and some were even browsing in their bras. Cash and credit are accepted and everything is out on the floor. Stop by if you feel flush and don't mind getting up close and personal with fellow Lela Rose fans.
