Park Slope Maternity Store Offers Lesbians-Only Discount

At Boing Boing, a maternity and breastfeeding boutique in Park Slope, ladies who date ladies are entitled to a 10% discount. Owner Karen Paperno, herself married to a man, explains to Brokelyn that she's trying to honor the spirit of the neighborhood, where she's lived since the 1970s. This isn't the first time she's run a lesbians-only promotion: She offered a similar deal after she opened the shop 15 years ago. After some bad reviews on Yelp recently, she decided to bring it back.

Paperno doesn't require shoppers to prove their eligibility, since she believes Park Slopers are too honest to lie (or exploit that one drunken incident in college) in order to get a deal on nursing supplies. She says she gets about one taker a day, as well as the expected number of complaints. “The lesbians love it and the gay males get upset,” she tells Brokelyn. “But their disposable income is so much higher than women’s. Men just make more than women.”
