End of an Era: The Last Porn Shop on St. Marks Shutters

Cherries, a holdout from a grungier, dirtier East Village, quietly closed its doors after holding a 50% off fire sale last month. It'll be weird to not see the almost-anachronistic 25¢ peep show signage, but we suppose the shop probably wasn't quite synergistic with its next door neighbor—a very PG-looking fro-yo shop. Cherries will forever live in our consciousness (or on YouTube anyway) through brief moment of TV fame when it was featured in the intro from the 2010 season of Saturday Night Live (a flash between Nasim Pedrad and former cast member Jenny Slate).

No word on who the new tenant will be, although word on the street is that prolific restaurateur Michael Hyunh owns a lease on the building. In the meantime, as the Village Voice points out, erotica aficionados will now have to detour over to the less gritty and higher-end LES adult emporium Babeland for porny paraphernalia and gift items.
