The Gargyle Sale Is Definitely Worth a Rainy Day Trek

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The Gargyle end-of-season sale is kind of what we wished Barneys would be. No disrespect to the legendary warehouse sale, of course, but sometimes it's refreshing to shop a more straightforward and edited sale—especially on days like today when crap weather is sapping your patience. The diminutive boutique is offering up to 80% off of women's and men's clothes and footwear from coveted downtown labels like Vena Cava and Rachel Comey.

The sale pricing is designated by color dots, starting from a red dot $30 running to a lime green dot of $125+ ( or "priced as marked"). Well, no time to waste—ladies, you're up first.

We noted that most items hovered around the $125 mark, but let's start with the best deals spotted first. At the lowest $30 color dot, we saw a bunch of camel and black Kai-aakmann cropped riding pants. In the $50 range, we picked up a Kai-aakmann black cowlneck LBD, an Acne silk grey tank, a Corpus sheer floral peasant top and black Them jeans.

At the $75 mark, highlights included a black fitted Surface to Air knit dress with laser-cut holes, a black and white paint-splotched silk Won Hundred dress (great for the transition to spring), a bunch of Viva Vena t-shirt–top frocks, an adorbs Sea New York satin Peter Pan-collared car coat, a melon-hued laser-cut Vena Cava silk tank (from Fall 09), and a royal purple, silky and baggy Whyred dress.

Let's go back to the $125+ bulk of goods that tempted despite the price. Highlights on the racks included a United Bamboo cowl neck dress with a lace skirt ($200), a lovely Lerario Beatriz purple velvet detail frock ($175), a Kai-aakmann duster trench ($150), a Rachel Comey ankle length black knit dress with fringe ($200), one Rachel Comey convertible Sojourner's Suit ($175), and Vena Cava distressed denim-printed tapered pants (the matching jacket is $175 and also from Fall 09).

As for footwear, the boots and booties are mostly priced at $150, such as the B Store brown peep-toe felt wedges and stacked heel moccasin loafers.

Now, on to the gents, who can find their racks toward the back of the tiny shop. We noted a bunch of items in the $75 range, including marled-knit Gargyle cardigans, heavy Fred Perry polos (in both black and white plaid and solids), and work-friendly Shipley & Halmos button-downs. In the $50 range, we saw a random smattering of one-off Velour plaids, Them jeans, and in the bins. bright fuschia Raf Simmons polos.

The sale is also a great chance to pick up end-of-season outerwear. We admired a Whillas & Gunn army green shearling-lined vest with leather collar ($100) and plush D.S. Dundee wool double breasted trenches ($275).

Men's shoes run from $75 for canvas oxfords to $150 for Rachel Comey black brogues to $175 for Rachel Comey shiny ankle-lace-ups and chukkas.

There are two private dressing rooms in the back for fitting, and both cash and credit are accepted. We saw a bunch of additional shoe boxes piled above the racks, so that bodes well for footwear, but pretty much all of the apparel is out on the floor. Extra bonus: Once you've finished up at Gargyle, take a stroll on over to the Project No. 8 sale to make the most of your rainy day shopping excursion. More on that in a bit.
