Is the shopping scene in the Flatiron District starting to catch up with Soho? That's the implication of this Crain's article, which notes that the strip of Fifth Avenue in the high teens and low twenties has recently attracted some fashionable retailers. Not only is Michael Kors taking over the former home of Benetton, but the old Nine West is slated to become the city's second Madewell. J.Crew's spin-off line of slightly trendier, slightly more expensive clothing should do well on the same stretch of Fifth that includes Anthropologie and Free People. And Madewell fans should be pleased to hear that the new space, at 115 Fifth between 18th and 19th, is slightly larger than the Soho location, meaning there's more room for the casual dresses and on-target denim that Madewell makes so well.
