Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
An unnamed staffer at the Barneys Warehouse Sale quietly mentioned to us that the menswear selection this year is tremendous and—sorry girls—that it's better than the womenswear. The menswear options sure felt never-ending. Making our way from the suits and outerwear downstairs up through the cavernous space of ready-to-wear and designer togs upstairs just about broke us. But in a good way, of course.
First off, there's a flip-flop in location. The ready-to-wear, casual outerwear, and designer apparel are upstairs, where the womenswear used to be. Going geographically, let's talk about the ready-to-wear, which takes up the central and back portion of the upstairs space, where the designer womenswear used to be. Piles and piles of jeans and casual pants are located in the back left-hand corner and we saw Gilded Age faded jeans for $120, PPD straight legs for $119 , Kane skinny jeans for $109 from $215), and RR cords for $79 (from $195).
To the right, you'll find a whole slew of shirting in a rainbow of patterns and colors. A sampling of what you'll find: A plaid Gant Rugger button-down ($159), a Paul Smith blue-hued floral ($129 from $285), a Gitman Brothers plaid flannel ($79 from $175), and a Marc by Marc Jacobs short sleeved mixed-graphic shirt ($79 from $168).
There are also tons of tees, including a questionable slouchy Marc by Marc Jacobs striped wife-beater ($39 from $78), Martin vintagey graphic t-shirt ($29), a deconstructed Prps 80's style graphic tee ($29 from $88), and a hot pink Lacoste for Barneys polo ($88).
We found rows and rows of outerwear near the jeans. A random sampling of the racks included a Band of Outsiders shearling coat ($979), a Bear for Wear suede field jacket ($629 from $975), a Bess beat-up studded moto-jacket ($929), a Woolrich navy barn coat ($229) and an R13 faux-shearling lined denim jacket ($239 from $595).
Speaking of outerwear, the designer section held quite a few marked down coats and jackets. In the Prada section, we found a Euro-style windbreaker ($429 from $715) and a plush dark green velvet blazer ($689). In non-outerwear Prada news, there were also a few camo-button downs ($219 from $745).
The designer roll call list includes Robert Geller, Thom Browne, Yohji Yamamoto, Zegna, Patrick Ervell, Gucci, Dries Van Noten, John Varvatos, Lanvin, Marc Jacobs, Alexander McQueen, Michael Bastian, Moncler, Balenciaga, Adam Kimmell, Balmain, Burberry, and Christopher Kane.
Now let's go downstairs where the suits are still neatly arranged in the same place as usual. On the racks we found a Canali navy pinstriped two-button suit ($849 from $1795), a Barneys-label grey suit with iridescent kaleidescope-lining ($499 from $998), a Burberry navy alternating pin-striped suit ($599 from $1200), and a white linen Giorgio Armani suit that was straight out of Miami Vice ($999 from $2795).
Work shirts are plentiful, with stripes, checks, plain white and banker blues ranging from $59 to $169+. As for ties, there were lots of Barneys label (like a dotted periwinkle one for $59 from $125) and we dug through to find a diagonal striped narrow Prada ($99 from $195), a fine-knit forest green skinny Ralph Lauren ($79 from $129) and a slightly staid navy Dior ($119 from $180).
The staffers were still setting up the shoes, but we did find (in size 11) Mark McNally green suede brogues ($279 from $565), Crockett and Jones for Barneys lace-up ankle boots ($299 from $625), Rachel Comey camel chukkas ($189 from $380) and Lanvin leather sneakers with a velcro strap ($339 from $695).
There are some premium hats located in the accessories bins, too. We were tempted to try on a Rod NYC fedora with punch plaid trim ($179), a Rag & Bone black bowler ($59 from $125) and a Rod Keenan pimped-out black velvet cowboy hat ($269 from $775).
Whew. We need a nap now.
