Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Lately it seems like every time a new store opens on Atlantic Avenue, the average price point in the neighborhood gets a little bit higher. Which is just part of the reason Cloak & Dagger makes a welcome addition to the Boerum Hill shopping strip. The new boutique actually sits just off Atlantic, on Hoyt Street behind Steven Alan. Not only is the space woodsy and adorable, but the selection is surprisingly affordable: A polka-dot bodycon dress was $82, while a sheer pink blouse with a bow (also available in neon yellow) was $78. Red jeans also fell in the $78 category; pair with a navy Madison tee for $48.
The racks are also sprinkled with slightly pricier fare, like a Gracia dress for $198. And of course we immediately fell in love with the most expensive thing in the store (a Lauren Moffatt dress for $420.) But for the most part, shopping here won't destroy your budget.
The place isn't hard on the eyes, either. The space is lined with a pressed-tin wall on one side and an exposed brick wall on the other. Potted plants offer some color against the hardwood floor, and a big window in back lets in light for the cactus and orchids behind the cashwrap. And a range of accessories, like prettily wrapped Saipua soap ($10) and MCMC fragrances ($49) act as decor as well as merchandise. If there's anyone left on your gift list, may we recommend the Verameat jewelry in back? Or, if they've been especially good this year, pick up a pair of the sunglasses—from Illesteva and Karen Walker—housed in cubbies above the right-side racks.
