Pretend It's Warm Outside with Haute Hippie's Prints and Sheers

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

We found lots of Haute Hippie's signature easy breezy pieces hanging from the racks at their Garment District sale, which kicked off yesterday. The racks lining the walls are filled with clothing from S/S '11 and other past seasons, while cottons, lingerie, and accessories sit in boxes below. Prices are up to 75% off retail. Cash and credit cards are accepted, and there is a curtained changing room built in a corner of the space. Take a look at the full price list posted in the photo gallery.

Outerwear is virtually non-existent at this sale besides leather and fur vests. We found a maroon Marabou feather vest for $125 (we were told the original retail was $695), also available in a cropped version in black. There is some knit wear in poncho and crochet styles, but not much in the way of chunky textured sweaters. "Novelty sweaters" are for sale for $120, and basic sweaters are $80. We ran across an exceptional leather patchwork crew neck sweater with a chevron pattern.

What this sale lacks in functional winter-wear it makes up for in sequins and glitter. Dresses are priced at $70 for non-embellished styles,$100 for embellished styles. A white leather fringe dress caught our eye, as did a tan leather crochet-and-fringe one shoulder dress. We also spotted a striking cobalt blue cut-out kaftan, but the piece was not for sale.

Blouses come in a variety of sheers, florals, and silks. There was a stunning lace cape blouse amid a sea of sheer oversized blouses in nude tones as well as brights. Blouses are priced at $60, about 75% off. There is not much in the way of denim, however, to pair with these floaty tops. We found two pairs of grey and light wash jeans. Pricing on some pieces such as these are unclear, so it's best to ask an employee. We mostly found sizes XS-M hanging on the racks, but most pieces are oversized and free sized anyhow.

The bottom line: Though most items at the sale aren't seasonally appropriate, Haute Hippie is offering up plenty in the way of lace, fringe, and chiffon. The sale will be re-stocked as racks get low; employees were hanging up new styles as we were leaving. The sale is especially worth your time if you're soon leaving on a tropical vacation for the holidays.—Apneet Kaur
