Tonight, Donatella Versace will show off her Versace x H&M collection to an audience of fashion editors and celebrities. Tomorrow, Victoria's Secret tapes its annual runway show. Today, WWD has behind-the-scenes looks at both of these fashion extravaganzas. Let's compare them, shall we?
The location: The Versace x H&M madness goes down at Pier 57 in the Meatpacking District, which is being transformed into "Versace for H&M Hall on the Hudson" for the occasion. As for Victoria's Secret, it's taping once again at the 69th Regiment Armory in Kip's Bay.
The clothes: Versace's H&M collection consists of 43 studded, palm-tree-printed, Miami-luxe looks (see them all right here.) The Victoria's Secret Angels beat that number with a total of 69 costumes on themes that range from "Angels Aquatic" to "I Put a Spell on You," which references New Orleans, voodoo, and the Brooke Shields child-prostitution movie Pretty Baby—really maximizing its potential to offend somebody, somewhere.
The entertainment: Nicki Minaj owns this one. Not only is she performing with Prince at the H&M show, but AllHipHop.com reports that she's just agreed to replace Cee Lo Green at Victoria's Secret. There, she'll be playing alongside some guys called Kanye West and Maroon 5.
The amount of hard work involved: H&M asked Versace to do a collab two years ago, but Donatella tells WWD that she wanted to "stabilize" her main collection first. It's an effort that seems to have paid off, as sales are up. The powers that be at VS, meanwhile, started working on Wednesday's show as soon as last year's ended. And poor Adriana Lima apparently hasn't consumed solid food in over a week.
What this all means for the general, non-Vogue-editing public: Versace x H&M will appear in stores a week from this Saturday, November 19, where it will presumably be greeted by total howling chaos. It should be a lot easier to partake of the Victoria's Secret show: All you have to do is park yourself in front of CBS on November 29, when the special airs.
