Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Marjorie Gubelmann may be one of the most recognizable faces on the NYC social scene, but behind the Prada pumps and Chanel couture blazers, it's all business. Gubelmann is the founder and CEO of Vie Luxe, a collection of home and bath fragrances that are based on Marjorie's far-flung travels to places like Sardinia, St. Barth's, and Buenos Aires. Being part of the international glitterati has its perks, like access to this network of exclusive, secret sample sales. Want in? Email these ladies and keep your fingers crossed.

Shop Secret is like the Black Card of sample sales. You have to be on the list and you don't know when they are happening...or who the next designer will be. It is all very mysterious. Then an email appears in your inbox and the excitement begins. Sometimes you go into the actual store and shop and when you pay, your name is on a list for a discount. And other times, the sale is at an offsite venue. Needless to say, you shop from current collections at a great discount for one day only.
