Fabergé, the luxury line famous for producing jewel-encrusted eggs, just signed a lease for an 850-square-foot boutique at 684 Madison Avenue. This is the first US boutique for the brand—not a surprise, since it was defunct for most of the 20th century and only relaunched in 2009.
Most jewelry brands would kill for a backstory like Fabergé's. The company rose to prominence in 1885 when Carl Fabergé made a gold-and-ruby Easter egg for Tsar Alexander III. The Russian royals were so charmed that the House of Fabergé went on to make dozens more eggs, only stopping in 1917 because of the Russian Revolution. (Bolsheviks: Not into luxury eggs.)
The eggs went on to tantalize collectors and become the stuff of pop culture legend: James Bond gets involved in a bidding war over one in Octopussy, and on The Simpsons, Bleeding Gums Murphy admits to having a "$1,500-a-day Fabergé egg habit." In 2007, one egg sold at auction for $18.5 million.
The revived Fabergé line doesn't produce Easter eggs anymore, but they do sell egg necklaces, including one covered with diamonds and rubies that costs $600,000. According to the Post, the brand chose its new Madison Avenue space because it wanted to be near Barneys and Hermés.
