The chic Parisian label Maje opened its first U.S. store this week on the corner of Spring Street at Wooster Street in Soho. Created by Judith Milgrom in 2000, Maje has developed a following among French actresses such as Marion Cotillard, and that coterie has now grown to include Emma Watson, Jessica Biel, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. The New York store is a replica of the stores in Paris so everyone can experience the original Maje vibe. With its cream colored walls, gold racks, and wood floors, it's a warm, inviting space.
Maje's style can be described as feminine, trendy yet approachable, and effortless. The store carries the complete 2011 Fall/Winter collection which includes jewelry, belts, scarves, purses and shoes. You can find t-shirts for $110 and scarves for $120. Basic black wool blazers (one of this season's best sellers) start at $470; there are also blazers embellished with leather sleeves and accents. Pants can be found in denim, wool or leather, slouchy or straight legged. Trying them on, by the way, is a treat: A floor to ceiling mirror is located in the changing area with terrific lighting to provide a head-to-toe view.
Some sweaters at first glance seem basic until you see the deep V in the back, or notice the small gunmetal sequins placed on the shoulders or side panels, bringing instant glamour to an otherwise basic wardrobe staple. Wool coats are not ordinary here; a two-tone tan and black jacket is a standout, as is their lamb fur coat in white or black. In terms of pricing and look, Maje appeals to a wide range of women: Mothers and daughters out for a day of shopping in Soho can both find something here.
The line is a mix of neutrals—grey, tan and cream—with pops of color like coral, and beautiful jewel tones of blue and burgundy. Cape dresses, Peter Pan collar blouses and outwear are flying off the racks. Get there before they disappear, or wait until the end of November, when Maje will have their e-commerce site up for holiday browsing.—Pam Krywy
