Remember Minority Report? Tom Cruise? Crime drama of the future? Barneys new Co-op floor cafe, called genes@CO-OP, is like the technology in that movie minus Tom and the whole murder thing plus shopping and brunch—in a word, amazing.
We previewed the café this morning at the Christopher Kane for J Brand breakfast. Barneys has equipped the space with a long boardroom-style digitized tabletop where each patron's placemat is basically a built-in iPad. The content is an assembly line of articles from Barneys New York's online publication, The Window, as well as shopping functions and a menu you can order SeamlessWeb-style or the traditional way—by tapping the call server option.
One of the designers said they're working out some kinks and the staff is still getting used to it, but so far there have been no cases of a rogue elbow accidentally ordering eight grilled cheeses.—Kenzie Bryant
