Following the wild success of its Nicola Formichetti pop-up, BOFFO has opened a temporary shop with lingerie line The Lake & Stars at 57 Walker Street today.
The majority of the shop is contained within a matte, black, fuzzy structure, which is juxtaposed with a clean, white, futuristic interior. Designers Nikki Dekker and Maayan Zilberman worked closely with architects to create a structure "like a kaleidoscope and a viewfinder," which stirred up sentiments of fun and childhood nostalgia for the duo. From the outside, shoppers can peek into the structure through tiny viewfinders. They can also enter the structure for an interactive experience.
The left side of the interior spotlights delicate pieces from the F/W 2011 collection draped from laser-cut hangers, in addition to limited-edition, worn-on-the-runway shoes, which were hand-painted by artist Francesca DiMattio and cost $225. It also showcases special "magic spell" and spirit candles and magnets, which range from $8 to $20, as well as their infamous cut-out stockings (in cashmere lace, argyle cotton knit, chevron fishnet, sheer swiss dot thigh high, and criss-cross cutout), which are already starting to sell out, according to the designers, and range from $45-$85.
To the right of the interior are mannequins dressed in top looks from the past ten seasons (Spring 2007 to Fall 2011) sporting custom Air Force Ones, which were a partnership between the designers and Nike and are available by special order for $275. Dekker and Zilberman described the mannequins' looks as "precious tomboy."
For their pop-up shop, the Lake & Stars designers explored interests outside the bedroom. "We asked ourselves, 'What does our girl have on her shelf?' And in turn, we asked ourselves what do we want to have on our shelves?" As a result, Dekker and Zilberman created little knickknacks like signature candy, sleepover toothbrushes, and undressing nesting dolls, which cost $3, $5, and $45 respectively.
The Lake & Stars' pop-up is the brand's first in New York. "We did one in Canada but this one was more hands-on," said the duo, who are excited to meet their customers. "We design for the thinking girl who gives messages through what she is wearing and is aware of these messages," said Zilberman. "We also design with friends in mind," added Dekker. The pop-up runs through November 23, and will be ready to shop Monday through Saturday noon—7pm and Sundays noon—6 PM.—Katherine Park
