Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Over the next four years, Macy's will go through a $400 million renovation project that, as WWD reports, will affect "almost every part of the flagship." This includes adding 10,000 square feet of additional selling space (which would round things out to 1.2 million square feet), adding luxury shop-in-shops to the mix, and turning its shoe department into "the largest shoe department in the world." Even the bathrooms and the wooden escalators are getting a facelift.

Between the makeover and the slew of recent/upcoming designer collabs, it seems safe to say that Macy's is working overtime on reeling in the cool fashion kids. Consider these bits: The new shoe department plans to display 300,000 pairs of shoes on a given day and will also boast a coffee/wine/chocolate bar "for recharging." The flagship will even have a pub inside that stays open past store hours.
