Where The Lake and Stars Designer Finds Antique Dresses

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Maayan Zilberman is the co-owner and designer of New York based lingerie/swimwear line The Lake & Stars. She grew up in Vancouver, Canada, but has lived in NYC since the mid-90's, and has a small baking company called WaveCake that she runs on her off-hours. Maayan has a pop-up store opening on November 11th as part of BOFFO's Building Fashion Series. In preparation for the opening night, we wouldn't be surprised if she heads to her favorite Park Slope vintage emporium for a dainty little number.

I've lived in Park Slope since 2001 and one of the nicest things about retail out here is that nobody is preoccupied with name brands or trendiness. The vintage stores are a mix of what my generation wore in college and the items fashionable women probably traded in for money to buy baby supplies. Guvnor's Vintage is my favorite one because they coordinate sections according to preciousness (not officially, but I have figured this out over the years).
In the very back are exquisite lingerie pieces and gowns in antique fabrics that rip if you try them on. I like to collect these (usually at closeout prices) for their detailing and unusual patterning. Guvnor's is a great vintage store for finding costumes too. They have a wall display of what I consider historic professional ice skating costumes. The other highlight at Guvnor's is their vibrant and helpful staff, and their precious Pomeranian named Dottie. Sometimes I go in just to give her a pat.
