The Goorin family has been selling well-crafted hats since 1895, but they've only been on Bleecker Street since last Wednesday, when their latest shop opened in the 420-square-foot space that used to house Electra News. The San Francisco-based company aspires to improve the headgear of hipsters everywhere. As fourth-generation hatter Ben Goorin told DNAinfo, "I saw all these kids starting to wear knit hats and truckers and I thought, 'I can do it better.'" And unlike with some things Bleecker Street, "better" in this case doesn't translate to "more expensive." Plenty of Goorin Bros. hats run in the $30-$40 range, and most cost under $100.
