Where the Novogratz Family Finds Affordable Art on the LES

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

New York City has more stores than anyone could physically tackle, but somehow we always keep returning to the usual suspects. To break out of the rut, we've asked some local shopping and fashion gurus to provide their hidden retail gems—those unique stores around our fantastic city that we might not all know about. Cue the Beatles: We're about to get a little help from our friends.

Robert and Cortney Novogratz spend their days developing properties with their NYC-based firm The Novogratz. Along with their seven kids, they're the stars of Bravo's addictive show 9 By Design. Their recommendation: An art gallery on Forsyth Street owned by a certain local fashion designer and her tinted-lenses–wearing husband.

Half Gallery is our go-to spot for art. Bill Powers and his wife, Cynthia Rowley, who own Half Gallery on the Lower East Side, have constantly changing exhibitions by both young, new artists, and seasoned veterans. They offer limited-edition prints at pretty affordable prices as well as one-of-a-kind originals. We love most of the artists featured and would recommend the Rene Ricard prints that they have for sale now. Their website, Exhibition A, is also a great place to shop for art and to just get inspired.
Recently at Half Gallery, they had a really great exhibit by Craig McDean showcasing his 'Sumo' series of black and white photographs. We must be addicted, as we just got a huge Sumo. Whenever we are in the neighborhood we always stop in to see what new art Bill has.
