Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
This is Store Sidekicks, an end-of-the-week feature in which we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures that inhabit shops across the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at email@example.com.
Walk into Love, Adorned on Elizabeth Street and you'll fall in love with the array of baubles and home goods, but you might also fall in love with a slightly larger store fixture. Her name is Birdy and she's an Affenpinscher. This week, she's our Store Sidekick, but every week for the last two and a half years, she's been sidekick to Lori Leven, the owner of Love, Adorned and its older East Village sibling, New York Adorned.
Lori rescued her previous dog, Chewbacca, by writing a letter to Dog Fancy, but Birdy was a rescue dog from Petfinder.com. The two are inseparable. Every direction Lori walks, Birdy follows, at least when she's not busy hiding under a table (she's a little shy.) You can also often find her lounging on the shop's antique Navajo rugs ($110—$1200) from the 1920s to 1960s or curled up in one of the Filson dog beds for sale.
As Lori tells us, Birdy always comes out of hiding to play with other dogs who come with their owners into the store. She especially liked Christmas, when six or seven people a day would bring their dogs by. Love, Adorned is about to turn two months old, and with their upcoming birthday the store will add more merchandise to an already-wide variety of jewelry, blankets, home decor, and much more. We're hoping for more Pendleton blankets because we love the patterns, but we're sure that Birdy is thinking of all the new pet friends she will make.—Jena Glick
