More on Soho's Wonder-Woman–Approved MAC Space

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Now that we've gotten some of our excitement about the Wonder Woman collection out of the way, let's explore the new MAC emporium at 109 Spring Street in greater detail. To make sure that passersby don't miss the MAC amidst the Kardashian craziness, the cosmeticians have painted the cast iron front an historically questionable shade of candy apple red (or maybe it's Coquelicot?). This store is so new that the MAC website store locator still lists the Soho store at the old 113 Spring site. MAC.'s previous make-up mart was much more subtle, presenting a subdued face in dove gray. To brighten it up they'd occasionally add a cherry or two, and this past Christmas, just before MAC made the move down the block, the windows were dolled up in tartan dreams.

Passing through the big red portals at the new MAC things go black, with a cacophony of scribbles across the walls, an attempted homage to downtown taggers. It's sort of the inverse of the mega-MAC in Times Square, where high-tech slickness prevails. Both offer an endless array of face paint, from the wonderfully wacky Wonder Woman line to lip stuff in every shade and hue. With ice and snow all around us, any burst of color is welcome.
