Welcome to Drunk Shopping, our feature celebrating the time-honored tradition of getting totally wasted while the sun's still shining before buying a bunch of debatably useful stuff that the sober you would be too timid or too restrained to take home. Each Friday we'll cobble together a new itinerary starting you off with a boozy Saturday or Sunday brunch before meandering through a few neighboring retailers and happy hours notable for seasonal specials, limited time availability, fantastic deals, recent openings, or new shipments.
It's not that terribly cold outside anymore, but there are still several thousand inches of wet, gray, disgusting snow melting into half-foot puddles of black slush at every curb. It's depressing, but we'd like to help. As purveyors of Drunk Shopping itineraries we find nothing quite as restorative as crazy-good deals and drinking. So this weekend we're hitting Soho for crazy good deals and drinking. Just wear wet-proof boots or even a good buzz won't dry off dampened spirits.
Start your day at Spring Street Naturals—places like this make you feel good about living in New York even when you can't buy a Diet Coke without tracking gallons of brown ice water into your apartment. From your vantage point in the airy, wood-paneled space, the acres of snow and trash are almost funny. Check out the weekend egg specials, the simple but effective Bloody Mary, the impressive wine list. Then check out and start shopping.
First things first, there are some major sample sales going on. For high-end and occasionally hard-to-find beauty, hit Space NK (through 7pm Saturday). For a lot of Theory, a little Helmut Lang and a dash of Gryphon, AG, and J Brand, hit the Theory/Helmut Lang sale ($69 jeans!) And for occasionally bespoke, timeless classics for both men and women, hit Seize sur Vingt.
From there, you might as well peruse Uniqlo's latest spring collection of +J offerings as well as the the new MAC space. Be sure to get a good gander at the new Wonder Woman line of cosmetics—we can almost guarantee all that pop imagery will elevate your wet, slushy mood. If not, leave it to Birdy the Affenpinscher, New York Adorned's official shop puppy.
If an adorable, tiny dog still has you pissed at life, get more drunk. We recommend Spring Lounge—a Drunk Shopping fav. Why? It's cheap, easy, dark and if you get there early enough on a Sunday, you might score a free bagel.
Enjoy! And please do share your Drunk Shopping tips, tales, and war stories in the comments!
