Zadig & Voltaire Oui Oui Ouis On Bleecker Street

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Liberté, égalité...and $200 T-shirts proclaiming as such. Welcome to Zadig & Voltaire, a hip French brand currently trying to clip themselves a corner of New York City's lucrative tourist shopping scene. As "affordable luxury," Zadig's offerings aren't the most inspired items; they are nicer than Zara, yes, but not nice enough to warrant the $300 price tag they have on some scarves and thin sweaters.

Regardless, the Bleecker opening means Zadig & Voltaire now has three identical boutiques in the city?Washington Street in MePa and Mercer Street in Soho as the other two. We kind of want to say "meh" to the whole thing, but we'll be nice in the spirit of fraternité.
