Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
You are now allowed to hyperventilate. The program of Fashion's Night Out goes on and on and to help you decide your itinerary for the evening of September 10, we've done the dirty work. Every day this week, we're presenting Top Ten lists for the events. We've already covered the Top Ten Gimmicks, Eats, and Celeb Appearances; now it's on to the Top Ten Music.
Cocktail? Check. Armful of shopping bags? Check. You feel like dancing during Fashion's Night Out, or at least getting sung to while you continue burning up your credit card, so where's the music? We've waded through the press releases and the miles of listings to pick out the Top 10 musical acts during FNO, and we're not talking about socialite deejays or anything; these are real performances.
10. Umbria Jazz Fest at Brunello Cucinelli
At 7:30pm, trumpet virtuoso Joey Pero will take the stage at the Madison Avenue store to complete the Umbrian jazz fest atmosphere. He will "play an exilarating set with his band" while star Umbrian chef Andrea Tiberi feeds the crowd with his signature dishes. 683 Madison Avenue.
9. Solange Knowles at Roberto Cavalli
We know we said "no DJs" for this list, but Cavalli has booked Beyonce's sister Solange to DJ the evening at his store. We're hoping for more than just her spinning tracks, however, since the girl can also sing. 711 Madison Avenue.
8. Pop-rock violinst Caitlin Moe at Vince
When you're chowing down on Shake Shack BBQ from Tory Burch next door, you can catch performances by Caitlin Moe. Guest of a Guest called her "Electroviolinist Extraordinaire" and she's collaborated with the Transiberian Orchestra. 833 Washington Street.
7. Corinne Bailey Rae at Douglas Hannant
This is sure to be one beautiful event, as British singer and songwriter Corinne Bailey Rae will give a mini-concert in Plaza courtyard around 8pm. If you show up a little early and make it down to the Hannah boutique in the Plaza shops, there'll be margaritas. 1 West 58th Street at The Plaza Hotel.
6. Janelle Monae at Ralph Lauren
Vogue's Andre Leon Talley will be the host of the evening, but the real magic happens when Grammy-nominated R&B singer Janelle Monae gives a "360 degree concert from the oversized loft windows." 379 West Broadway.
5. City Opera Thrift Shop
What else but opera would you expect from the City Opera Thrift Shop? While shopping, a surprise City Opera singer will serenade and shoppers (and non-shoppers, since it's no purchase required) can enter to win tickets to an NYC Opera performance. 222 East 23rd Street.
4. Eric Lewis' window performance at Donna Karan Collection
Donna Karan loves jazz pianist Eric Lewis and his unconventional style, and this won't be the first time she's featured him. Lewis is a former member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, so he's plenty at home. He'll be performing in the window of the store on a baby grand piano for all to see, so no RSVP needed. 819 Madison Avenue.
3. Idina Menzel and guest at Michael Kors
What starring Broadway role hasn't Idina Menzel made her own? She may be best known for her time as Maureen in Rent and Elphaba in Wicked, but she's re-entered the limelight recently after starring in five episodes of Glee as Shelby Corcoran. There are hints of her bringing along a special guest, but Idina is plenty on her own. 667 Madison Avenue.
2. Designers take the karaoke stage at Bergdorf Goodman
If you're totally fine betting your night on the talents of amateurs, you may want to arrive early to catch Bergdorf's big karaoke competition from 9-10pm. Patrick McMullan hosts as Carlos Falchi, Cynthia Rowley, Eugenia Kim, Naeem Khan, Nicholas Kirkwood, Nicole Richie, Norma Kamali, Ranjana Khan and more belt out songs after a few too many cocktails. 754 Fifth Avenue at 58th Street.
1. Karen Elson and Jack White with Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga
In addition to attracting the art crowd for their exhibit of Cindy Sherman photographs and the fashion crowd for the mere fact that Ghesquière will be in the house, Balenciaga's small store will also be a music hotspot during FNO as iconic model Karen Elson is due to perform at 9pm. She will sing songs from her debut album The Ghost Who Walks, produced by her husband Jack White. It's pretty safe to assume that he'll also be there, if only for moral support. 542 West 22nd Street.
