Even before we hit Times Square, we knew we were heading in the right direction when we passed pairs of girls walking happily away from Broadway with brown bags overflowing with ruffles. That's right, ladies, it's that time of year again: Betsey Johnson is holding her sample sale at the Millennium Hotel at 145 West between Sixth Avenue and Broadway. Taking up a conference room on the sixth floor is a colossal amount of gargantuan jewels and chains, velvet Betseyville bags, and perfect-for-parties poufy frocks. There weren't a lot of shoes left?only 4 or 5 pairs of plastic wedges, probably because prices dipped down to $10 for shoes. But we saw plenty of day dresses for $50 and evening dresses for $65 (original prices run around $300).
Most of the merchandise is classic Betsey. We saw many varieties and sizes of short tube dresses with huge ruffles. Also in stock: Huge bows on everything. Accessories for the dresses run from $15 for earrings to $40 for large necklaces and $20 for smaller chains.
There was a corner for women to change and examine themselves in provided mirrors. And the crowd wasn't just preparing for next year's prom; lots of ladies we spoke to were buying dresses for summer parties and family get-togethers. Sale lasts until Friday, giving you plenty of time to check out the dress stock.—Joann Pan
