Shoppers on their way to the Barneys Warehouse Sale after work last night found the Seventh Avenue side of 17th Street blocked off by the NYPD. We arrived around 7:15pm, just in time to see several police trucks—including one for the hostage negotiation team—pull up to the corner with their sirens on full blast. Rubberneckers on Seventh Avenue speculated that someone had gone crazy in the shoe section, but a trip to the Eighth Avenue end of the block revealed that the sale was humming along without incident.
Cops waiting behind the caution tape in the middle of 17th Street explained that they'd been called in because an "anti-sociable individual" was throwing bottles from a building. (They all seemed highly amused by the rumors of a hostage situation at the Barneys sale.) By 8pm, the situation had died down and the block was quiet once again.
