Gordon Novelty Shop Shows Its Crumbling Face to Broadway

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

After spending years hidden behind a giant tarp, the gorgeous old Gordon Novelty Shop space has been revealed once again. Fans of New York history (or of peeling paint and old-timey signage) should stop by Broadway and 22nd Street to view what Jeremiah of Vanishing New York calls "one of the most beautiful facades left crumbling from the old city." But go soon: Thor Equities owns the place, and if they took down the tarp, it's got to be because they're renovating for a future tenant.
