A Union Square Itinerary For Chains and Chains and Some Cool Stuff

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Welcome to Drunk Shopping, our feature celebrating the time-honored tradition of getting totally wasted while the sun's still shining before buying a bunch of debatably useful stuff that the sober you would be too timid or too restrained to take home. Each Friday we'll cobble together a new itinerary starting you off with a boozy Saturday or Sunday brunch before meandering through a few neighboring retailers and happy hours notable for seasonal specials, limited time availability, fantastic deals, recent openings, or new shipments.

Being all cool all the time is kind of exhausting, isn't it New York? I mean, living here is seriously a never-ending race to keep up on all the hip new bands and hot new designers and trends in cocktails and leggings and the blogosphere, not to mention whatever adorable desserts are sweeping the nation at a given moment (Oh, still cupcakes? Okay, gross.) So, let's take it down a notch, alright? Let's go Drunk Shopping at the damn mall, and by mall we mean Union Square and Gramercy. Obviously we're still going to get all wasty and eat somewhere authentic and glowingly-rated—we can't throw all our cred away. So Bar Stuzzichini it is for southern Italian nibbles. We like the $18 brunchtime deal: One appetizer (get the panelle, or chickpea fritters, for serious), one main dish, and a prosecco. Then order like 11 more proseccos. Then go out into the world and shop.

Now, we'll start out hip so we feel better about ourselves later. Head north and duck into No. 8a and Opening Ceremony at the Ace Hotel*#8212;their summer sale is still plugging along. And a drink in the lobby is—let's be real—going to happen. There, now we can start slumming.

Head back south along Broadway or Fifth Avenue and let your lame flag fly! Indulge in stops at the Gap, Zara, Coach, J.Crew, Skechers, Club Monaco, Cole Haan, Geox, Kate Spade and Pier 1 Imports. Summer sales are still a-going and if you've stayed properly hydrated (with vodka) you should be, too. Get into it: Laugh, point and buy.

By now you should've reached Union Square where a new Duane Reade awaits. And come to think of it, you need dish soap, tampons and yogurt-covered raisins. Right next door is the ancient underground catacomb known as Nordstrom Rack where one can find debatably worthwhile kind-of-bargains after a dizzying trip down an massive escalator into one of the grimmest spaces in town. The jaundice lighting will probably make you sick so check out the newish 24-hour Best Buy where you can probably procure some "medical marijuana" if you hang around looking all shady and drunk long enough. And, you're right there—DSW is on sale.

Well, that was yucky. You probably feel dirty and want to recharge your classy-hip-New Yorkiness. Well, there's a new tote at the Strand. Plus, the newish Conran Shop as well as Christian Louboutin's favorite store-decorating furniture await at ABC Carpet & Home. And, finally, retrace your footsteps north to Journelle. Their extensive and pretty fancy array of lingerie is marked down for their semi-annual sale.

Woo. That was epic. Take a load off: Brother Jimmy's recently opened a location just east of Union Square on 16th Street. Their drink specials do not disappoint ($10 pitchers of Bud on Sundays), and if you're peckish: Fried green tomatoes.

Enjoy! And please do share your Drunk Shopping tips, tales, and war stories in the comments!
