Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Back in May, we learned that the long-empty Tower Records space on East 4th and Broadway was going to become some sort of extra special Equinox. Now, we've got the details, and they're special indeed. The gym is a soon-to-launch Equinox offshoot called Blink Fitness. Picture nearby David Barton, with its club-like atmosphere and over-the-top styling, and then picture exactly the opposite: A sleek, minimalist space obsessed with keeping things simple. Memberships cost only $20 a month, and customers will be able to sign up online or at a self check-in desk.
The low-key approach doesn't mean the place has no frills, though. The gym was designed by David Rockwell, who's also worked on restaurants like Maialino and Nobu and hotels like the W. It will have 150 pieces of cardio and weight equipment, and it will clock in at a not-too-shabby 17,000 square feet. Look for it to open this fall along with two sister facilities in Yonkers and Paramus, NJ.
