Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
We can't imagine anyone being very passionate about Theory. It's so gray, and so responsible-looking, and it never seems to change much from season to season. But that's exactly why it's the perfect label to wear to the office (assuming you work in a place that won't let you get away with a hoodie)—it's smarter than Kenneth Cole or Club Monaco but just as unassuming. As such, anyone needing a career-wear update should get to Theory's Gramercy showroom—today if possible. Their menswear sample and overstock sale started this morning and at lunch sales seemed brisk. You certainly wouldn't call it a mob scene—that would be so un-Theory—but a healthy crowd of guys are assertively stocking up and items (especially suits and dress shirts) are going fast.
Look out for a deep selection of blazers and sports coats ($179). They're available in a full range of sizes and in mainly solid shades of gray and beige with a few neutral seersuckers thrown in. Overall they seem extremely seasonally appropriate. Suits are equally light-weight and equally void of color, and at only $349, their racks were already pretty thinned out. Most-shopped sizes (like 40) were already about three hangers away from totally sold out. Pants ($89) and shirting ($59 to $89) are ample, however, and offer some of the few shots of color (cropped pants in mint and lemon, five-pocket trousers in orange; gingham shirts in yellow, orange, and blue) in an otherwise aggressively beige (that's definitely an oxymoron) space.
For weekend, find a wide array of tees—mainly solid v-necks in yellow, orange, and weathered stripes ($29), cropped navy or liberty-floral swim trunks ($39), and a series of identical black-on-whatever (yellow, green, gray) shorts ($59). There are also a ton of those lightweight summer scarves that Theory and friends have been trying to make happen for three summers running ($39—likewise the slightly-cheap looking almost slim ties).
The sale goes through Monday; credit cards are accepted. Do note: It's on the second floor.
