Upon arrival at the Uniqlo store this morning for the launch of the Velvet collab, we were greeted by smiling waiters with sparking water, orange juice, salmon tartar...and an empty store. Anticipating a line out the door, we had gotten there early, but the sparsity of shoppers demonstrates New Yorkers' lack of enthusiasm for this California collab.
The very wallet-friendly line does have a few standouts. The muted tanks, dresses, tunics and harem pants are all made of a comfy, pajama-like material and almost everything costs $19.50, besides a few shirts for $15.50. The color palette is pretty conservative: Black, white, brown, shades of gray, and the occasional washed out purple or pink, keeping with Velvet's aesthetic of versatile closet staples. There are a few styles that have more unique details, such as a tank dress with buttons and a dress with cutout shoulders (very reminiscent of a Sophomore style, but at a fraction of the price). If you're in the market for affordable new layering pieces or basics than you should definitely stop by, but don't expect a re-invention of the t-shirt dress.—Rachel Traub
