We don't mean to be hasty, but we get the sense longtime Village Voice food critic Robert Sietsema is not a big fan of the Limelight Marketplace, the just-opened mall in the former nightclub/church on 20th Street. How can we tell? Here's the first line of his review:
Walk in the front door and a wave of stink assails you—the compacted smells of a half-dozen narrow stalls specializing in overpriced perfumes, soaps, and other stinkum, a chokingly sweet odor that's familiar from every shopping mall in the U.S.Sietsema makes some good points—it is ridiculous that there's not a single place to hang out in the entire mall, other than an outdoor courtyard—but mostly it's just fun to see him let loose on a church filled with fancy cupcakes.
Another representative quote:
It's so totally a mall for rubes. On the gala opening day last Friday, the place was filled with a profusion of flowers, as if the church were being forced to attend its own funeral.Click through for the rest, and pay special attention to the hilarious, furious photo captions.
