It sounds like the glorious fever dream of an uptown Uniqlo might finally become a reality. According to Crain's, the Japanese fast-fashion retailer is negotiating to rent a 70,000-square-foot storefront in 666 Fifth, at Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street. The space has been subject to fervid speculation ever since Brooks Brothers moved out in January of 2009. For a while it looked like Abercrombie might take over the lease, but they changed their minds, leaving bystanders to wonder if Topshop, Forever 21, Zara, or some other trendy fast-fashion business would snap it up. Crain's reports that Topshop did indeed bid on the lease, as did British brand AllSaints, which ultimately decided to open in Soho. Uniqlo reps won't confirm anything, but an anonymous source tells Crain's, "The lease is 99% done—it's all but signed."
