A Bird's-Eye View of the iPad Line Outside Apple MePa

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

At 9am today, the iPad officially went on sale at Apple stores and Best Buys around the country. Maybe it will revolutionize computing and save the publishing industry; maybe it'll turn out to be an overpriced, oversized iPod Touch. Either way, the first people to know for sure are the folks currently waiting in line outside the stores. Let's check in with them, shall we?

A tipster sent in these amazing overhead shots of crowds outside the Meatpacking District Apple Store around 8:45am. Looks like it's going to be a long wait, folks. Expect the full report soon. Meanwhile, we're covering the Fifth Avenue line live on Twitter at @rackedny.

UPDATE: Writes our tipster in a follow-up email: "There were cheers at 9am as the first customers were welcomed, and as the line continues to grow. It's even longer now. There are new cheers each time another group is allowed in the store. Seems like Apple still has 'it.'"
