Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Two days ago, a reader wrote in to inquire about a retail mystery. She explained that she'd just had lunch next to two women carrying brown shopping bags. One had affixed to it a piece of paper that said "Club Monaco sample sale" with a checklist of what she'd bought. Wrote our tipster, "The girl had bought 8 things (at least!) for $90! Anything in Club Monaco is at least $90! So is it true, or is it just lunchtime delirium for me?"

Turns out it wasn't a hallucination after all. The Club Monaco sample sale opened quietly yesterday on far west 26th Street. (Our tipster must have seen people coming from some kind of editor's preview.) Erin of Sugar Rock Catwalk stopped by Wednesday morning only to be deterred by a half-hour wait, but she quizzed people coming out, and what she found sounds positively unreal: Tons of merch, much of it damaged but all of it insanely well-priced, with shorts, shirts and accessories starting at $5 and dresses beginning at $15. It's a true sample sale, so sizes run small. Expect to see 4s and 6s for women and mediums and 40s for men. There are a ton of shoppers and all of them are binging on the deals, so the line moves slowly, but $15 dresses might be worth the wait.
