East Hampton is turning into a lonely, retail-barren place. Gucci, Brooks Brothers, Cole Haan and Calypso Home have all ditched the town's main shopping strip, an address which looks impressive on paper but doesn't contribute much to their bottom lines. Meanwhile, local store owners feel increasingly embattled. Says one: "A few years ago, it was all mom and pops. Now these stores have taken over and they don't even stay open. It really hurts the rest of us." [NYP via Curbed Hamptons]
