The Earnest Sewn Sample Sale Is Not for the Shy

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Through Sunday, Earnest Sewn is selling samples, back stock, and irregulars at 94 Orchard Street, just around the corner from its Lower East Side shop. Unlike previous sales, this one is really focused on the jeans. There's a smattering of dresses and skirts ($60) from Shipley & Halmos, some $60 sweaters, a box or two of Majestic knitwear (all under $65), and some Field button-downs ($30), but denim dominates.

Jeans are $60 a pair or two for $50. Sample denim goes for $30, as do jean jackets. The selection is fairly wide, although we could have done with fewer low-rise skinnies. Everything is presented no-frills–style out of boxes on the floor, and the dressing room is similarly frill-less: It's basically just two maroon tarps strung up on ropes. A third tarp separates the men's section from the women's but has a tendency to shift open, meaning that if you're changing on the lady's side, you'll occasionally see a disembodied man-hand appear around the curtain and tug it back into place.

Random act-fast bonus: When we were there last night, we found three pairs of Loeffler Randall boots and one pair of gray booties, each going for $75.
