Maria Cornejo on Menswear

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Today's WWD features an interview with local cutting edge designer Maria Cornejo to discuss the launch of her first menswear capsule collection for Spring. In the interview Cornejo discusses her inspirations (tweedy England), the trials and tribulations of designing men's ("it was like having your brain sucked through a straw"), her target male customer (architect, writer, otherwise artsy dude aged 35 to 40) and what she's doing on her down time. Next on the list is to make half her Greenwich Street store menswear, on the transition to making the entire store men's only. The capsule line is currently sold at her own boutiques as well as Project No. 8. [WWD, subscription req'd]
