Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

How you feel about the James Perse sample sale that began today in the Chelsea Market depends on how you feel about paying $80 for a discounted sweatshirt. Perse's high-quality basics don't come cheap—that sweatshirt could be $135 full-price—but some people will balk at shelling out that much money when they could get something similar at American Apparel for only about $40. Regardless of the pricing, the Choosy Beggar makes the environment sound lovely:

A modern, seductively-lit venue; polite staff and fellow shoppers; separate entrance on the south side of 16th Street (about halfway between 9th & 10th); a clear separation between men's and womenswear; clearly priced stock—this sale's superior to most Madison Avenue shopping experiences.
There's apparently a ton of merchandise, with polos going for $40, long-sleeved tees going for $60, and coats going for $105 to $129. Also, sale staffers are handing out James-Perse–branded water—a random perk if there ever was one.
