Breaking: Macy's Is On Fire Again

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

The City Room informs us that Macy's Herald Square flagship was just evacuated after a fire broke out in the sub-basement. As of 12:40, firefighters were still battling the blaze, but no injuries had been reported. This is the second time this winter that Macy's has burst into flame; back in December, an escalator fire forced the store to evacuate holiday shoppers.

We'll be following the City Room for updates, but if you want really on-the-ground reporting, it might be wise to watch the Twitterer who just wrote, "wow macy's is on fire, no huge flames or anything crazy but there is smoke and all the shoppers are on the street. im tryna sneak in lol."
