Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
In an effort to make reading Racked NY as much like being in the tents as humanly possible, we'll be liveblogging the shows all week, from the suspense of waiting in line (will the seats be any good?) to the drama of the runway (will anyone stumble?) to the post-show euphoria. This time around: modern American design from Michael Kors
Show location: The Tent at Bryant Park
The skinny: Native son and Project Runway judge Michael Kors specializes in gimmick-free luxury for grown-ups.
Celebs spotted: Donald and Melania Trump, Molly Simms, Michael Douglas, Simon Doonan of Barney's, Mickey Boardman of Paper Magazine, Robert Verdi, Queen of Fashion Week Fern Mallis, Elle editor Kate Lanphear, Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington
The takeaway: The Michael Kors woman is going to have a very warm head and a very cold sternum next fall. Fur abounded, especially in the form of big cozy hoods, and shirts were either sheer or low-cut. Gold and its more sensible sister camel dominated, with occasional pops of warmth provided by vintage-looking red-brown leather belts. Even the shimmery pieces towards the end were slouchy and hippie-ish, not remotely figure-skater-esque. As for the Kors man, expect even more camel and some giant cowl necks.
10:09am: Just arrived to the main tent for the show and of course we run smack dab into Donald Trump schmoozing on the runway.
10:11am: Ooo! More celeb-spotting: We've got Molly Simms, Michael Douglas, Simon Doonan of Barney's, Mickey Boardman of Paper Magazine...
10:13am: The Donald is hot property for the photographers. Maybe it's because he's brought his hot wife Melania, herself a former model.
10:15am: Breaking fashion news: Donald Trump is wearing a red tie!
10:17am: Fern Mallis, head of IMG Fashion and thus queen of Fashion Week, is hugging people and Robert Verdi is seated directly across from us in the front row.
10:20am: A French-accented announcement booms over the runway: "Ladiez and gentleman! We will start ze show instantly!"
10:22am: Anna Wintour sighted! She's sitting next to Grace Coddington and is dressed in something quite sparkly for this early in the day.
10:23am: Kate Lanphear of Elle just strolled in, and the PR girls are racing to find her a front row seat. And the lights are dimming...
10:24am: It's moments like these, with so many photographers in the way of the only exit, that we realize what a fire hazard this whole scene is.
10:25am: It's starting! First look: A couple in caramel fur coats.
10:27am: The third look is a completely sheer top with major nipple action. We're hoping the model is 18. Theme of the show thus far? Boobs, fur and hats.
10:28am: A fully fox-fur skirt just walked the runway and some ladylike blazers, even one with Alexander Wang-ish leather sleeves.
10:29am: The fur looks are mostly belted with gorgeous huge belts in a rusty color. And the clothing features big cowl necks.
10:30am: It's a fast-paced show, with models often coming down both sides of the runway at once.
10:31am: Wrinkled wool and an awesome '70s leather dress . Now moving on to red carpet looks: a sparkly long black gown with sleeves with detail cut-outs.
10:32am: A choker? Really? We knew the '90s were coming back, but...okay it looks surprisingly hot.
10:33am: The color scheme for the collection is very muted: grey, gold, camel, black. An elegant older woman in the front row either loves all this or has a facelift that makes her look approving all the time.
10:34am: It's over!
10:35am: The finale walk is to a disco song about New York City. Aw! Kors is beaming!
