Gift Shop Wars! The Standard Hotel Opens a Store of its Own

The Ace Hotel wasn't the only hip lodging to add a gift shop or two this weekend. On Friday, the Standard opened a small but well-appointed boutique on its ground floor.

Like the Ace Hotel's new Opening Ceremony, the Standard store carries the usual hotel shop amenities alongside trendy tchotchkes from young brands like Wool and the Gang and the cigarette paper company Krink and Bambu. And like the Ace's new No. 8a, it also stocks candy from Papabubble and crazy art objects. No. 8a has Yoko Ono's smile in a box; the Standard shop has local artist Julia Chiang's porcelain apple sculpture.

Chiang also contributed what sounds like the store's best (or at least stickiest) feature: Wall art spelling out the words "All for You" in Ring Pops, which will ultimately melt over time. For more photos, check out Coolhunting's full report.
