Once the doors opened, the forty-strong early arrivals stormed the gates (well, coat and bag check) of the Calypso St. Barth sale, which offers up to 80% off of clothing, accessories and minimal housewares. Anyone not on a tropical vacation right now can live vicariously through the resort-y discounts which started at a crazy five dollars for adorable mohair and silk camis by me Barbara Brignone.
While the beachy Cayman Islands-meets-East Hampton resort frocks are the usual go-tos at a Calypso sale, we highly suggest first making a beeline to the back to snag the remains of the surprise deal of the day: $29 cashmere sweaters. We're talking 100% Scottish or Italian cashmere cropped cable-knit sweaters that originally went for $395. Work fast because the hopped-up-on-discounts shoppers were already swooping in.
Another highlight (not to make you zig-zag around or anything) was the set of two $99 racks up toward the entrance. We realized compared to $5 angora camis, $99 may seem steep, but there were some beautiful gold brocade jackets, a camel-and-leather side-belt dress (originally $495), Oriental-patterned and beaded neck silk frocks, delicate macro-lace tunic tops, and leather. We loved the chocolate brown dress (originally $598) and supple brown cuffed shorts. For $99, those are definitely on our bargain list.
As for the rest of the sale, the bulk of the dresses and separates run at either $49 or $69 each. Highlights included an abstract red and brown leopard print ruffle dress, whimsical tie-dye poufy-skirted frocks in both navy and an inky grey, and water-color floral maxi-dresses for $49. We also admired a flirty smock-neck cap-sleeve silk dress in grey, navy, and mango for $69. There was also the adorable floral and beaded neckline Lourdes dress marked from $135 down to $19.
Also spotted at the sale: ruffly skirts for $19, Velvet tanks for $9, Blue Life tees for $19, AG Jeans for $49, bikinis in a multitude of colors and patterns for $19 and Castaner espadrille wedges and heels for $49. There are also a couple $29 sample racks toward the back that hold a mish-mash of tropical beachy frocks, tanks and peasant tops. They're definitely worth a look and may be a hit or miss, depending on what you're in the mood for.
There is a dressing room at the back and the inevitable line had already started just ten minutes into the sale. Staffers are plentiful as well as helpful. Although, sadly, we asked a staffer if they would lower prices and she gave us an emphatic no. We suppose there's always hope. Cash and credit are both accepted and the sale promises to replenish every day so keep your fingers crossed for more $29 cashmere sweaters.
