When we walked into the preview for this week's Temperley London and ALICE by Temperley sale, we almost swooned. Their gorgeous second-story Broome Street store has once again been turned into one of the season's prettiest sample sales. Almost all the full price clothing has been removed from the floor, and the sale merchandise is now artfully displayed on mannequins and racks throughout the loft.
The Fall collections of the main Temperley London line, designer Alice Temperley's less expensive (but equally beautiful) ALICE by Temperley line, and all accessories are now 60% off retail (with the exceptions of the main line's trademark honeycomb knits, which are only reduced 30%, and all long evening dresses, which are now 30% to 50% off.) Not surprisingly, much of the stock is dresses, although there are some jackets and other separates. The Temperley London dresses we saw, many of which normally cost in the $1,200 to $1,600 range, are now running between $400 and $700—although some were higher, like one leather one which originally listed for $2,700.
The ALICE by Temperley line, however, is much more affordable, which means there are some particularly good prices to be had. Most of its dresses, including knits, were priced at under $200. We were particularly impressed with the red strapless cocktail dresses for $158 and the long sleeve black lace shifts for $130. We also spotted a couple of the line's simple black leather dresses, which came with wide leather belts. These originally sold for $795, but are now priced at $320—a particularly good deal when you realize that the belts alone retailed for $180.
The sale also includes one rack of past seasons' Cruise and Spring collections, which run up to eighty percent off. For those seeking one-of-a-kind items, there is also one rack of American size four samples, which were all brought from London for press purposes. When we were there, these hadn't been priced yet, but we were told they'll probably run about 80% off of what their retail prices would have been.
This Temperley sale is actually breaking some new ground. For the first time, some of the designer's intricately-made wedding dresses are included. These gorgeous white confections are selling for 30% to 40% off retail (they were originally $2,500 to $12,000) and, happily, come in a variety of sizes.
