Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Last night was all about our furry little friends with the launch of United Bamboo's second and much-buzzed cat calendar followed by the Humane Society's Cool vs. Cruel awards event honoring friend-of-Racked John Bartlett and VPL designer Victoria Bartlett.
We started out with prosecco and pretty little cake balls at Creatures of Comfort, the recently-opened-in-New York and surprisingly spacious multi-line boutique from LA (it's like if Dash were run by non-reality stars who happened to have great taste!) Blogger/scenester Julia Frakes and Fashionista hosted the party, celebrating the launch of United Bamboo's second kitty calendar. The photos—peruse the gallery—are amazing: Assorted, very cooperative cats dressed up in miniature cat-sized United Bamboo looks. Guests were invited to purchase the 2011 calendar for $50 or bid on the original prints. Silent auction-style, framed photos started at $60 and crept up from there.
From Nolita's Creatures we slithered north to the swanky Bowery Hotel for the Humane Society's awards gala. Celebrating cruelty-free student design as well as the work of fur-free designers John Bartlett and Victoria Bartlett (VPL), the event was hosted by a litany of downtown A-listers including Mark and Charlotte Ronson, Mickey Boardman, Mick Rock, Ali Wise and Erin Fetherston (plus the Donnas which we were pretty stoked on).
We didn't see any of those people , but we did see lots of cute animal face posters. Looking into the sweet, wet eyes of a harp seal or river otter: majorly effective in keeping us far, far away from fur (does vintage count?) We also spotted crazy Calvin Tran—most-hated contender from the Fashion Show season two. Shocker: He was wearing an Under Armour-tight baby doll tee.
