This is Store Sidekicks, an end-of-the-week feature in which we profile the fuzzy wuzzy creatures that inhabit shops across the city. If you'd like to nominate your favorite store animal, drop us a line at email@example.com.
The head of sales and marketing at West Village boutique A Man and a Woman is a seven-year old Shih Tzu named Lucas. At least, that's what his owners Erin and Ben Crandall told us. Erin opened up A Man and a Woman a few months ago, and we suppose that was the moment that Lucas got to test his true calling—fashion.
"He was born to be in fashion," Erin told us. Ben joked that he sometimes gives customers shopping advice; say if a customer picks up an item that won't look good on them, Lucas will tug at their leg as if he were the fashion police of Christopher Street. We couldn't take our eyes off him, and he couldn't take his eyes off the camera. When it was time for his big debut as this week's Store Sidekick, he was more than ready to pose. As he put his paws together and gave us a little pout, we weren't sure if he was posing to be the next Top Model or if he wanted more treats. (Our guess is the latter.)
Lucas doesn't like to be without his owners and has loved them dearly since he was rescued from a shelter on the Upper East Side. They told us that when they go away on trips, Lucas always hops in the car, ready for motoring. He even ran out of the store once to hop in someone else's car, thinking it was Ben and Erin leaving for a vacation in the Hamptons. We found it equally hard to say goodbye to him, but we may be back to check out the Osborn kicks that A Man and a Woman carries, and hopefully we'll be seeing him then.—Jena Glick
