Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.
Due to an anxious crowd clamoring at the door this morning, Julie Haus had to open a bit early for their sample sale. And honestly, we don't blame them. When we arrived a few minutes prior to the set opening time, rabid shoppers were already hitting the racks hardcore.
The sale offers from 40% to 80% off current and past season samples (like stuff that's in the stores now), plus production pieces from both the flagship Julie Haus and her diffusion J/J by Julie Haus lines. The sale is arranged and priced per a coded system with charts posted all over for convenience and, of course, we're here to give you the lowdown on the whole process, too.
We would suggest making the "Black 'S' Samples", which are located on the middle right, the first stop—and quite a few girls were doing just that. Here, shoppers will find $55 dresses (like silk pleated jewel-toned frocks) and rompers (we snagged a 70's-ish denim wrap style that's in the stores now) and $95 coats (like a houndstooth belted one with aqua toggles and piping).
Next, check out the already dwindling "Red Heart" (i.e. least expensive) past season samples are located on one rack at the back. Prices start at $10 for shorts to $25 for dresses (we saw sequins, leopard print and creamy pointelle tunics) to the best deal of all, $45 for girlishly adorable fall coats (only a few left, so act fast).
The "C" current season Julie Haus items are on the mid-left of the sale and here, ladies were flipping through $145 dresses (we found the sexy deep-V lace overlay frock that's currently in the boutique for $395) and $75 tops (saw lots of the pinking-shear edged ones).
This is where it gets a bit confusing because there are also "Current Season 'C' Samples", which are also on the right. Here, we loved the $85 dresses (spiky shouldered silky frocks in black and cerulean blue blue) and rompers (like a disco-sexy champagne number). Tops here are $70.
All the J/J by Julie Haus pieces are located to the much quieter area on the right of the entrance. Here, we think the best deals are the $70 coats and jackets—like a long navy blue pinking-sheared rough-edge coat. Tops (flirty, flowy ones in lilacs, plums and forest green) are also $70 and dresses are $110.
In case you'd like to study up before the sale, all the price charts can be viewed in the photo gallery. Also, as it is a sample sale, the items are mostly sample size. There is a small communal fitting area near the back, but it was a complete mob scene and girls were flowing out onto the main floor. Just an FYI, shoppers seemed to be serious Julie Haus fans (we recognized some hoarders from last time), so they're a pretty determined bunch. The always chic and super friendly Julie is on hand to help, as usual, too. Cash and credit are both accepted. Everything is out on the floor, so all we can say is head over soon for the optimum sample snagging opportunity.
