When you emerge from the subway at the 5th Avenue/53rd Street station, you may immediately look up at the expanse of white plywood now towering above the street and wonder what store is making its magic behind there. The stark white walls say only "Fast Retailing," but those who love their majeggings and +J know that's the parent company of Japanese giant Uniqlo.
Uniqlo signed the lease for this old Brooks Brothers spot way back in March, and it's been quietly renovating since. Although there's still no official opening date, it's okay to start getting psyched. This one will be 2.5 times as large as the Soho Uniqlo, so it'll be all set to take over US flagship status.
