Crowds at last year's sale

Racked is no longer publishing. Thank you to everyone who read our work over the years. The archives will remain available here; for new stories, head over to Vox.com, where our staff is covering consumer culture for The Goods by Vox. You can also see what we’re up to by signing up here.

Tomorrow at 8am, Chelsea's Metropolitan Pavilion flings open its doors for the annual Yves Saint Laurent friends and family sale. Last year we saw all sorts of uncouth behavior, including the formation of an angry mob. Luckily, shopping bloggers Madison Avenue Spy and Cheryl Shops have each published posts helping their readers prepare for the chaos that lies ahead. Here's all their wisdom distilled into handy Q&A form.

If it's a friends and family sale, can I still get in? Totally. As Cheryl explains, "friends and family" used to mean the sale was only open to people with a direct connection to the brand, but now that sample sales get listed online, the circle has widened. If you appreciate YSL, you're officially a friend. Heck, you're like family!

What's for sale? Madison Avenue Spy reports that merchandise is generally two or three years old, which means the amazing mohawked shoes above won't be there, sadly. Do note than some pieces will be damaged or dirty, especially once those eBay guys get done with them—but also be aware that YSL will restock every day.

When should I get there? Depends what you're looking for. If you want a bag, wake up early and be prepared to fight with eBay shoppers. "Women, last year, complained about men grabbing dozens of bags without even considering what they were holding," writes Madison Avenue Spy. She endorses stopping by around 3pm for "a less hostile shopping experience," but if you must arrive early, plan to get there at least by 7am. That's also when our lineblog will begin.

What if I can't make it tomorrow? Not a problem! Not only does the sale last through Saturday, but as both blogs point out, prices tend to fall on the last day.
