It was a big retail day for Elie Tahari yesterday. First, the sample sale opened, and then the label threw a party at Saks Fifth Avenue to unveil the new in-store Tahari boutique. The designer himself was on hand to host to fête, and a random mishmash of New York bold-names dropped by for photo ops, champers, and pretty substantial cheeseburger sliders. (True story: We saw people actually eating!).
Sadly, Lily Van Der Woodsen Humphrey (otherwise known by her real name: Kelly Rutherford) did not make it. We were so excited to ask her if she's been to the Hermès sample sale, too—since she named her son Hermès and as you know, it always comes back to shopping. But to fill the Gossip Girl void, Nate's new girlfriend and Melrose Place vet Katie Cassidy was on hand, looking pretty killer in a festive (and youthful) Tahari sequined mini-frock.
We asked the LA transplant if she had been to any sample sales yet—a litmus test of a real New Yorker. Sadly she hadn't due to her schedule. As for shopping, Katie tells us, "I haven't actually had a chance to do much shopping, but Diane Von Furstenberg...I spend quite a lot of time at. And we shoot all over the city, so it just depends." She admits she does a lot of online shopping, even on Gilt Groupe (we're just imagining GG taking a break in shooting at 12pm sharp so the cast can start stocking their shopping carts.) She then added, "I spend a lot of time at Rag & Bone [the oft-tagged Nolita outpost]. I think that during the day that's more my style because it's so comfy and it's so cozy and just relaxed down to earth."
Also on hand to celebrate and mix with the well-dressed industry types: Singer Kat DeLuna, in a Tahari sequined tunic top and liquid leggings, dropped by with a few friends toward the start of the party. Richie Rich, toting his essentials in an LV wrist pouch/murse, breezed in to check out the scene. A very Amazonian-seeming Kelly Bensimon, in a sleeveless leather dress and heels, showed up on the later side—typical. Sadly, we witnessed no cat fights or jellybean-quelled breakdowns.
The Tahari boutique, located just off the elevators on the fourth floor, is quite sizable. The dressier pieces surround a zen-like seating area featuring white couches and a glass coffee table. The more casual pieces, including denim, frame the shop-within-a-shop. There are also handbags, shoes and some statement necklace accessories to choose from. So there you have it: Tahari high-low shopping, each within walking distance of the other.
