Upper East Side residents no longer have to travel east or south to find an Urban Outfitters: The chain opened up a bi-level store on Third Avenue this past Thursday. The new store sits cozily next to the Gap on Third between 85th and 86th streets. Inside, antiques that look sourced from Goodwill hang from the ceiling, seeming to defy gravity. Hovering on the wall along the stairs is a rainbow formation of wooden planks that make you feel like you're in Lumberjack Wonderland, or Anthropologie.
Easy navigation through women's clothing on the first level leads you past the industrial cement-block walls to the lower level of the store. There, the fitting rooms hide behind a wall of wooden planks and square cubes. Sadly, neither those nor other home furnishings are available for your purchasing pleasure. However, books and accessories can be found laid out on tables or hung on hooks throughout the store.
We didn't have to fight through crowds of people when we visited on Friday. Be warned, though: The narrow layout may lead to chaos during the holiday season as Upper East Siders converge on Urban's beloved winter attire.—:Jena Glick
